Torchy Brown

ShuBrew and Khonso Brewing collaborated on Torchy Brown, a smoked beer that brings woodsmoke character to a sessionable format. At 4.75% ABV, the beer balances approachability with the distinctive intensity that defines the smoked style, where malt is traditionally treated with smoke during kilning to create its signature profile. This collaboration showcases how two breweries can explore smoke-forward brewing together, offering beer lovers a chance to experience how smoke integrates into a lower-alcohol framework.

As one user put it: “Torchy Brown is a dark Grodiskie (smoked wheat ale) conditioned on peaches. It is a homage to the first Black female nationally syndicated cartoonist, Jackie Ormes & her iconic comic character, Torchy Brown. Torchy first appeared in the Pittsburgh Courier in the 1937-38 comic strip Dixie to Harlem. Like Torchy, our beer is sublime yet subtle, a little smokey, and all good!”
